George is sending Markham a copy his book. Charles Ferguson friendship has giving him belief that he could do something worth while. He discusses cutting up of calf skins. He loves Markham's work. There is a hand written letterdiscussing Jesus, St, John and religion.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
